Ever had a quarter-life crisis and booked a one-way flight to Thailand to study Muay Thai, only to stumble into a gym full of some of the most genuinely badass people ever born? Just me, then? Okay. Well anyway, training with said badasses impacted me so much that I decided to design them an entire brand identity, website, and clothing merch line to help them attract more customers and build a stronger gym presence in Chiang Mai.
I teamed up with a lifelong friend and training partner from the gym (@confuerza), and together we turned the space into a visual experience that matched the attitude of its owner, head coach, and ONE Championship fighter, Rambong Therapat, and his trainers. We got our hands dirty and transformed the front office windows into giant billboards showcasing the branding so people would know they’re walking into the right place, and cleaned up the interior to showcase the merch alongside Rambong’s gazillion Muay Thai trophies and ribbons.
Obviously, this project was a little different from my usual gigs and clients. Rambong doesn’t speak a lick of English, and most communication in the gym happens through animal-like grunts or a quick jab to the gut. Sounds like a lovely place, doesn’t it? Point is, we had a lot of free rein, and in my opinion it resulted in something pretty special: a contrasting red and black colourway running through the identity, imagery that captures the tenacity of the training while also showing the friendliness and kindness of the trainers, and a logo that merges Thai and English with a pair of bull horns on the sides (Rambong is know to fight with the furiosity of a bull, so a link to that felt mandatory).
This one sits close to my heart, and if I’m honest, it’s hard to capture its spirit in a showcase like this. The whole thing was more of an experience than a job, but it only feels right to include it here anyway. Below is a link to the full video of the snippet shown above. If you want to know more about Muay Thai and why Thai people believe in it so much, it’s the perfect place to start.
